Literacy
A key goal of CHOICES for Parents is to support parents in the early stages of literacy development with their deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind child and foster a love of books.
What is it?
The READ Program for pre-literacy aged children (0-3) provides parents with the learning opportunities and tools (READ Kits) needed to engage, relate, and build on vocabulary that is part of the story telling process. In executing this program we are providing parents with successful strategies to create language rich, interactive memories with their infants/toddlers and giving children the communication skills needed to start school on par with their hearing peers.
More information...
CHOICES for Parents has created two instructional videos that specifically target reading with a deaf, hard of hearing, or deafblind child. The children and parents in the videos are shown using various reading strategies and the information presented is completely accessible in spoken language, sign language, and captions. The first video focuses on how to read to deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children aged 0-18 months and the second video focuses on reading with toddlers from 18-36 months. In addition to the videos, we created several webinars to share more detailed information about the reading strategies presented in the videos.
