    CHS Youth Connections Program (CHOICES for Parents) is a statewide advisory committee of parents and professionals ensuring that children who are Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing and their families connect with the necessary resources, advocacy, information, services, and support within the home, school, and community.

    Founded in 2000

    Every year, we support families of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing children by connecting them with resources, advocacy, information, services, and support. Help us provide the next 20 years of programming for our current and future families by donating $200! That’s $10 per year for 20 years!

     

    We provide:

    ~ Early Literacy programming
    ~ Adult role models and tutors
    ~ Sign Language instruction for families in English and Spanish
    ~ Family events, workshops, programming and more!

     

    Your donation can support home visits for families, registration for sign language classes, and the gift of books for children to keep as their own.

    Do you think your baby may need a hearing check?

    National Guidelines

    Joint Commission on Infant Hearing, 2019

    • All babies should have their hearing levels checked no later than 1 month of age. This is often done in the hospital or birthing center at birth.
    • All babies should have their hearing levels identified no later than 2 months of age.
    • Early intervention services should start no later than 3 months of age.
    • Parent to Parent support should start by 6 months of age.
    • Deaf Role Model support should start by 9 months of age.

    A key goal of CHOICES for Parents is to support parents in the early stages of literacy development with their Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind child and foster a love of books.

    Watch instructional videos and webinars that specifically target reading strategies you can use while reaA small taglineding with a Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or DeafBlind child.

    Connections

    On-going, family-centered support program that links adults who are Deaf, DeafBlind or Hard of Hearing called Mentors, with families who have children who are deaf, deafblind or hard of hearing, providing an array of support services.

    KidFest

    Annual social event for families of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing children to connect and make new friends!

    READ Day

    To foster a love of literacy, CHOICES for Parents goes into schools for READ Day with Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing Programs statewide. We also sponsor the annual DEAR Day....Drop Everything And READ in schools and early intervention!

    Sign Language Classes

    CHOICES for Parents offers FREE American Sign Language classes taught in spoken Spanish and English. These classes are for parents whose children are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Family members are welcome.

    EHDI Day

    An annual recognition event to highlight the importance of early hearing detection and intervention efforts in Illinois.

    ARMED

    Every child has a dream and every dream deserves a chance. A great way to start is to find out what other adults who are Deaf, DeafBlind or Hard of Hearing have achieved.
